#bitesize – Lachlan James on The 5 Strength Qualities Every Coach Needs to Train Smarter

Five Key Strength Qualities

Unlock the science behind the five key strength qualities every coach should know. In this episode, we break down the origin of the five strength domains, explore why maximal and fast strength are crucial for elite performance, and reveal why reactive strength needs a completely different training approach.

Five Key Strength Qualities

Understanding the Five Strength Qualities

Training smarter begins with understanding the five key strength qualities. These are maximal isometric strength, explosive strength, heavy slow strength, maximal dynamic strength, and reactive strength. Each quality represents a specific physical trait that contributes to athletic performance, especially in field and collision sports.

Why These Strengths Matter

Heavy dynamic strength is often prioritized because it reflects an athlete’s ability to apply force under load essential in contact sports. Meanwhile, explosive and reactive strengths support rapid force production and speed, both of which directly transfer to game-day actions. Notably, counter movement jump (CMJ) metrics are commonly used to assess these traits due to their accessibility and relevance.

How to Train Reactive Strength

However, not all strength qualities improve with the same methods. For example, reactive strength defined by contact times under 250ms requires targeted drills such as pogos, sprint bounding, and quick ground-contact plyometrics. Without focusing on short contact time, athletes see little transfer from traditional jump or lifting work.

Smart Use of Strength Technology

When using tools like force plates, it’s crucial to ask: Does this data help inform training? Is it cost-effective and practical? Additionally, coaches should avoid overloading programs with too many CMJ metrics. Instead, focus on three: jump height, movement time, and countermovement depth.

Conclusion

By focusing on these five core strength expressions, coaches can streamline testing and training processes. In turn, this approach enhances performance while avoiding unnecessary complexity.
