How Phase 2 Bridges Rehab to AFL Conditioning | Dean Filopoulos

Phase Four Performance Training

High Intensity Rehab Training

Transitioning to Phase 2 Recovery

In the second phase of the Collingwood FC rehab protocol, the focus shifts toward rebuilding performance capacity through structured intensity. After establishing a solid recovery base, athletes begin integrating higher-intensity conditioning while still managing overall workload. This balance is essential to avoid setbacks and ensure the injured foot, ankle, or calf continues to heal effectively. Moreover, this stage emphasizes controlled progression, allowing athletes to regain confidence in movement.

Prioritizing Quality Running Mechanics

At this stage, quality becomes more important than quantity. Instead of simply increasing distance, the program prioritizes refined running techniques such as intensive tempo and speed endurance. These methods help athletes improve efficiency, coordination, and muscle response. As a result, movements become more precise and less risky. Additionally, focusing on technique ensures that athletes rebuild proper biomechanics, which plays a crucial role in preventing re-injury.

Incorporating High-Intensity Conditioning

Another key component of Phase 2 is VIFT conditioning, which introduces short bursts of high-intensity effort. These intervals, typically lasting under 60 seconds, are designed to push cardiovascular and muscular limits safely. Furthermore, this approach mimics real-game demands, helping athletes’ transition smoothly back into competitive environments. Because of its structure, VIFT conditioning allows for high output while still controlling total training volume.

Preparing for Return to Sport

Ultimately, Phase 2 serves as the bridge between rehabilitation and full athletic performance. By combining speed work, controlled intensity, and technical precision, athletes build resilience and readiness. Consequently, they are better prepared for the dynamic and unpredictable nature of sport. This phase not only restores physical ability but also strengthens confidence, ensuring a safer and more effective return to play.
