How to Secure a Full-Time AFL Role

The Path to a Professional AFL Role

Landing a full-time role in professional AFL is a competitive journey that requires dedication and strategic planning. The AFL Career Pathway is challenging, with most professionals taking three to four years to secure their first full-time job. Based on insights from AFL high-performance coaches, understanding the key milestones along the AFL Career Pathway can help you prepare effectively.

How Long Does It Take?

AFL professionals typically spend one to four seasons in semi-pro or community sports before securing a full-time contract. However, 18% of surveyed professionals reported spending seven or more seasons before breaking into the pro level. This highlights the importance of persistence and experience-building.

Common First Full-Time Roles

The most common entry-level full-time roles in AFL include Head of Academy Strength & Conditioning Coach (36%), PhD Sports Scientist (27%), and Reconditioning Coach (27%). These roles often serve as stepping stones to higher positions within professional clubs.

Education and Qualifications Matter

A strong academic foundation is essential. 72% of professionals held a Bachelor’s in Sports Science, while 80% had a Master’s degree. However, a Master’s is not always necessary; practical experience and industry connections play a crucial role.
