#bitesize – Gareth Sandford on Mastering Speed Endurance and Critical Speed for AFL Athletes

Speed Endurance Training Insights

Mastering Speed Endurance Training

Understanding Speed Endurance

Speed endurance plays a critical role in enhancing athletic performance. Speed Endurance Training Insights highlight how high-intensity efforts lasting 15–20 seconds can maximize peak lactate levels. By leveraging Speed Endurance Training Insights and targeting the anaerobic energy system, athletes can improve their ability to sustain intense efforts and elevate their maximal aerobic speed (MAS).

The Importance of Critical Speed

Critical speed represents the highest sustainable pace where the body primarily relies on aerobic energy. Training at or below this pace ensures lower fatigue costs and quicker recovery. However, exceeding it activates fast-twitch muscle fibers, increasing lactate production and overall fatigue.

Speed Profiles in Athletes

Athletes have unique speed profiles, determined by their anaerobic speed reserve—the range between MAS and maximal sprinting speed. For instance, AFL players like Charlie Cameron excel in sprinting, while others, such as Sam Walsh, dominate in endurance. Understanding these profiles helps tailor training to an athlete’s strengths and weaknesses.

Balancing Training Throughout the Year

Speed training should not be limited to the offseason or preseason. Maintaining consistent low-intensity sessions, typically at 70% of max heart rate, helps sustain fitness and prevent overtraining. Even 20–30 minutes of easy aerobic work adds valuable “deposits” to an athlete’s fitness “bank account.”

Combining Speed and Endurance

Team sports demand a balance of speed and endurance. Effective training incorporates both components, ensuring athletes are prepared for the dynamic demands of their sport. By focusing on consistent effort and proper intensity, players can maximize their performance.

In this episode, we explore key concepts like speed endurance, maximal aerobic speed (MAS), and critical speed with Gareth Sandford. We break down speed endurance for short anaerobic efforts, MAS as a VO2 max-related metric for team sports, and crucial speed as the last sustainable aerobic pace. Gareth shares practical strategies for balancing intensity and recovery, tailoring training to individual athletes, and optimizing high-speed running and conditioning programs. From return-to-play scenarios to AFL draft combine preparation, this episode is packed with actionable insights for high-performance coaches and athletes.
