#bitesize – From Intern to Pro: The Skills, Habits and Mindset That Get You Hired in Elite Sport

Elite Sport Career Skills

What does it actually take to land a full-time role in professional sport when hundreds of applicants are competing for the same contract? In this episode, I break down the elite sport career skills AFL clubs are really hiring for, and why developing them can separate you from the crowd. I also explore why building relationships matters more than any certification, how early career coaches can use research, varied environments, and personal athletic experience to fast track their development, and share a free scorecard tool to help you measure exactly how competitive you are right now.

Elite Sport Career Skills

Build breadth before you specialize

Breaking into elite sport takes more than passion. Elite Sport Career Skills are built by wearing multiple hats early, learning in different environments, and staying open to every coaching opportunity. For example, you might work in a private gym, support group sessions, and coach athletes one on one. That variety matters. It builds awareness, confidence, and practical understanding. As a result, when bigger roles come, you are more prepared for the real demands of the job.

Develop technical skill and practical coaching

Just as importantly, clubs are looking for more than textbook knowledge. You need strong foundations in sport science, testing, strength and conditioning, and movement coaching. In addition, you should understand speed, agility, acceleration, deceleration, and rehab support. Being able to work alongside physios and doctors is also a major advantage. Therefore, the goal is not simply to know the theory, but to apply it in a way that improves athlete performance every day.

Relationships shape your impact

However, great coaching is not only technical. The best practitioners know how to connect with athletes, earn trust, and create respect through consistency and care. Athletes need to understand why the work matters, especially when the process is tough. That is where communication and presence become powerful. When relationships are strong, your coaching has greater impact and your message lands more clearly.

Separate yourself through action

Finally, the industry is highly competitive, so intent alone is not enough. Stay across current research, coach in as many settings as possible, and train hard yourself so you can live what you teach. Likewise, use every year of your development wisely. Small experiences add up. Over time, they can become the difference between being overlooked and being hired.
