#bitesize – Understanding Body Mechanics: Frans Bosch’s Approach to Training

Frans Bosch's training method

Introduction to Body Mechanics

Frans Bosch’s training method emphasizes the importance of coordination over isolated strength exercises. While traditional training methods focus on individual muscle power, Bosch critiques this by pointing out two major flaws. These methods often overlook the negative aspects of training, focusing only on the positives. Additionally, they assume that strength training transfers directly to performance, which Frans Bosch’s training method argues is rarely the case.

Understanding Muscle Slack

One key concept in Bosch’s methodology is muscle slack. Muscle slack refers to the lack of readiness in muscles to apply force at attachment points. While resistance training builds muscle mass, it can increase slack if overemphasized, which hinders athletic performance. Particularly in sports like rugby, where speed and explosive movements are essential, too much slack can cause athletes to move slower.

Balancing Strength and Speed

In rugby, Bosch stresses the importance of maintaining upper body mass for protection while avoiding excessive lower body mass, as it slows down players’ running ability. He also advises eliminating counter-movements in exercises, as these movements waste precious time in high-intensity scenarios, which can significantly affect performance on the field.

Attractors and Fluctuators in AFL

Bosch also explains the concept of attractors and fluctuators, particularly useful in AFL. By stabilizing key joints (attractors), athletes reduce unnecessary movement and improve their interaction with the environment through fluctuators, like the trunk, ensuring more efficient gameplay.

The Role of Flexibility in Athletic Performance

Finally, flexibility plays a crucial role in injury prevention. Contrary to popular belief, flexibility doesn’t hinder athletic ability. It allows athletes to be more resilient, with no negative impact on performance.
