#bitesize – Effective Approach to Athlete Profiling and Speed Development

Athlete Profiling Speed Development

In this episode, we talk about what coaches can take from the High-Performance Certificate and the key pieces of speed development, especially through Athlete Profiling Speed Development. We also dive into jump testing and how Athlete Profiling Speed Development reveals different athlete profiles, from powerful but slow to quick and explosive.

Whether you’re a coach, sport scientist, or strength and conditioning professional, this episode gives you both career tools and performance testing insights you can apply to your own practice.

Athlete Profiling Speed Development

Why Athlete Profiling Matters

Athlete profiling speed development is not just about running faster. It’s about understanding the unique needs of each athlete, so training is purposeful. By identifying strengths and weaknesses, coaches can build programs that maximize potential and reduce wasted effort.

The Four Key Areas

When profiling athletes, we break speed into four areas: acceleration, agility, game speed, and top-end speed. While acceleration and agility measure explosive movement and lateral quickness, game speed highlights decision-making. In fact, anticipation often beats raw sprinting ability on the field.

The Role of Force and Velocity

Sports demand rapid force application. It’s not about who can lift the heaviest weight but who can apply force the quickest. For instance, an athlete with a slightly lower jump height but faster reaction time often performs better in contests than one with a slower, higher jump.

Tailoring Training to Athlete Types

Every athlete responds differently to training. Fast twitch “Ferraris” thrive on intensity but can burn out with too much volume. Meanwhile, others need strength to improve stride length or explosive power to sharpen agility. Tailored training ensures progress without unnecessary fatigue.

Practical Profiling in Action

Grouping athletes into four categories high-not quick, quick-not high, elite mix, or neither makes programming clearer. With force plates or simple jump tests, coaches can quickly profile squads and deliver training that genuinely moves the needle for performance.
