#bitesize – Derek Hansen, Sprint Coach and Return-to-Play Specialist

Sprint Testing Insights

In this episode, we break down the art of athlete profiling and coaching resilience. Sprint Testing Insights reveal how simple speed tests uncover hidden strengths, how early acceleration shapes sprint outcomes, and how slow-motion video exposes unseen movement flaws. Through these Sprint Testing Insights, we also explore the emotional toll of coaching from overextending yourself to celebrating the unseen victories of injury prevention.

This conversation is a must-listen for sport scientists and coaches who want to balance performance, longevity, and athlete health in high-performance environments.

Understanding Sprint Profiling

Sprint coach Derek Hansen shares how profiling tests, like the 10 m and 30 m sprint (or 10, 20, and 40 yards in American football), reveal an athlete’s acceleration and speed potential. These simple measurements provide clear feedback on how efficiently an athlete builds speed from the start, often predicting their maximum velocity later in the sprint.

Using Video for Deeper Analysis

To improve performance, Hansen uses slow-motion video (at least 120 frames per second) to capture key movement details. This allows coaches to observe tension in the body, the athlete’s stride pattern, and arm movement. By pairing these videos with timing data, coaches can easily identify if an athlete is pushing too hard, carrying unnecessary tension, or struggling with rhythm.

Finding the Right Effort Level

Hansen emphasizes that sprinting isn’t about going “all out” on every stride. Running is cyclical, meaning overexerting on one stride disrupts the flow of the next. Athletes perform best when they learn to balance power and relaxation staying fast while maintaining control.

Coaching for Longevity

He also highlights the importance of sustainable coaching. While it’s tempting to push every athlete to their limit, true progress comes from smart programming, patience, and consistent improvement. Success often shows up quietly through fewer injuries, smoother training phases, and stronger long-term development.

The Invisible Wins

Finally, Hansen reminds us that great coaching results often go unnoticed. Preventing injuries and guiding athletes safely through training phases may not get applause, but these are the foundations of lasting performance success.

Highlights from the episode:

– What sprint splits can tell you about acceleration and top speed
– How slow-motion video exposes hidden movement inefficiencies
– Why pushing at “10 out of 10” can actually make you slower
– When helping everyone costs your own wellbeing as a coach
– Why great coaches are rarely praised for preventing injuries
