#331 – Derek Hansen – Enhancing Speed and Efficiency for Athletes

Speed and Efficiency Training

Optimizing Speed and Efficiency in Athletes

Profiling and Testing for Acceleration

Athlete development begins with understanding their unique performance profile. Speed and Efficiency Training plays a crucial role in this process, as utilizing 10m and 30m sprints helps evaluate early acceleration and overall speed. Transitioning to 40-yard tests, especially for sports like American football, offers deeper insights into how acceleration translates into top-end velocity. Incorporating Speed and Efficiency Training with tools like smart speed sensors provides immediate feedback, allowing coaches to correlate short-distance times with longer sprints efficiently.

Using Video to Refine Mechanics

Slow-motion video analysis is a game-changer for improving running mechanics. Recording athletes at 120 frames per second or higher reveals inefficiencies like unnecessary tension in the neck and shoulders. Combining video insights with performance metrics enables coaches to address issues such as over-pushing on-ground contact, leading to smoother, more effective movement.

Teaching Relaxation for Speed

Contrary to popular belief, maximum effort doesn’t always equate to maximum speed. Encouraging athletes to run at 80% perceived exertion often yields equal or better times than full effort. This approach conserves energy and highlights the importance of execution over brute force, fostering both speed and efficiency.

Gradual Progression to Minimize Risk

Athletes need graded exposure to high-velocity movements like bounding to reduce injury risks. Even technically skilled individuals benefit from a structured progression that inoculates them against potential strains or overuse injuries. This cautious approach balances talent with safety.

Lessons for Coaches: Balance and Impact

Coaching demands energy and focus, but the relationships built with athletes and co-workers matter most. Coaches must prioritize self-care and family time to maintain their well-being while maximizing their impact.

In this episode, we are joined by speed development expert Derek Hansen. We discuss enhancing speed for footballers, athletes, and high-performance staff. Derek shares insights from his 30-year career, including technical details, training methodologies, and the importance of conditioning. We also touch on challenges in the industry, effective coaching strategies, and maintaining the balance between professional ambitions and personal well-being.
