Reconditioning Elite AFL Athletes

Individualised Rehab Over Cookie-Cutter Programs

Reconditioning elite AFL athletes requires far more than a standard rehab template. Each player’s injury, personality, lifestyle, and competitiveness must be considered. No two recoveries are the same. Therefore, success comes from collaborating closely with the athlete and tailoring every stage of the process.

Always Have a Contingency Plan

Flexibility in planning is crucial. Injuries and illnesses can quickly change daily training numbers, making Plan A obsolete. Thus, having backup plans (Plan B or even Plan C) ensures that sessions stay effective, even when the unexpected happens.

Leveraging Smart Technology

To accelerate progress, modern rehab incorporates tools like ForceDecks, ForceFrame, NordBord, and BFR (Blood Flow Restriction) training. These tools provide clear metrics and allow practitioners to load tissue safely, especially during early-stage recovery when athletes are limited in movement.

Balancing Load and Return

A cautious approach may seem safer but bringing players back underprepared increases the risk of poor performance or re-injury. Therefore, testing strength and power, monitoring daily signs, and pushing limits—when safe—are key to long-term success.

Keeping Athletes Engaged

Rehab isn’t just physical; mental engagement is vital. Cross-functional sessions, offsite training, exposure to other sports, and varying drills help keep motivation high. Moreover, staying connected with the main playing group boosts morale and commitment.

The Four Phases of Return

The reconditioning journey includes four phases:

✅ Recovery – Managing symptoms and diagnosis.
✅ Reloading – Reintroducing basic movement and gym work.
✅ Reconditioning – Building performance capacity.
✅ Return to Train – Full integration into team sessions.
