I have worked in the elite performance sector for nearly 7 years. All of this time has been spent at Melbourne Football Club in both the men’s and women’s teams. In particular, I have been the Head of Performance for the Melbourne AFLW program since AFLW commenced.
Q&A with Kayne Johns
I have a passion for developing all athletes to be the best they can be. Prior to working at Melbourne, I was a swimmer of 15 years, competing at the national level. I love hard work and challenging my athletes to get the most out of their body and mind.
I have completed a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science and I am an accredited strength coach.

Like most S&C coaches, I’m a failed athlete, having tried my hand at everything from motocross racing to golf. Once it became clear that I was never going to make it as an athlete, my focus turned to being involved with sport at the highest level. S&C was the obvious answer.
Ben provided sound advice to young people studying to be Strength & Conditioning coaches, explained some of the differences between training men and women, and revealed the one key skill that athletes should focus on if they want to make it to the big time.
After completing a bachelor’s degree in Exercise & Sports Science and a master’s degree in High Performance Sport, I have spent the last 6 years working in elite football programs, including the VFL, VFLW, AFL and AFLW. I been responsible for all facets of the strength & conditioning programs, from rehabilitation, to conditioning, to strength and power, to sports science and load management. I currently work for the St Kilda Football Club as the strength & conditioning manager for the AFLW team. I am passionate about developing robust and powerful athletes and enabling them to become the best players they can be.

I have a passion for developing all athletes to be the best they can be. Through my love of sport, particularly AFL, I developed a passion for strength and conditioning. I played at TAC Cup and VFL level in my late teens to early 20s, gradually transitioning to becoming a full-time strength and conditioning coach.
My diverse industry experience, involving years of hands-on mentorship and a personal journey filled with multiple significant injuries, has culminated in a unique perspective. From this, I have the experience and know-how to help athletes of any level reach their full physical potential.
