AFL Combine Training Approach

AFL Combine Training Strategies

Optimizing the Yo-Yo Test

The yo-yo test is all about managing energy and movement efficiency, which is a crucial part of the AFL Combine Training Approach. Start with a slow, controlled pace to conserve energy for the final stages. Alternate the side you turn from to avoid overloading one side, which can help reduce injury risk. As part of your AFL Combine Training Approach, practice the yo-yo test a few times before the combine to fine-tune your technique and improve your performance.

Crushing the 2K Time Trial

In the 2K time trial, pacing is critical. Don’t rush out too fast—focus on maintaining a sustainable pace for the first lap, then gradually increase your speed. Save your strongest effort for the last 100-200 meters when it becomes a sprint. Taper your training two weeks before the event to avoid fatigue.

Improving Agility and Jumping Techniques

The agility test emphasizes speed over endurance. Make sure to drop your body height when changing direction, keeping arm movements compact and efficient. For jump tests, focus on driving force through the balls of your feet and hinging at the hips to use your body’s full power. A strong jump technique will give you a better chance to excel.

Boosting Sprint Performance in the 20-Meter Test

The 20-meter sprint test relies on a powerful start. Work on your explosive first steps by practicing at least twice a week. Keep your body leaned forward to maximize acceleration, and aim to improve your performance over short bursts to ace the test.

In this episode, we discuss essential strategies for the AFL Draft Combine. We covered endurance events like the Yo-Yo and 2k time trial, focusing on pacing, efficient movement skills, and muscular conditioning.
